Join celebrated author and former poet laureate of New York, Marie Howe for a special reading and discussion of her new book of poetry, Magdalene.
Magdalene imagines the biblical figure of Mary Magdalene as a woman who embodies the spiritual and sensual, alive in a contemporary landscape. By gradually learning to embrace the contradictions of her own life, this Magdalene struggles to transform herself into a woman who lives without shame. Erotic, spirited, and searching for meaning, she is a woman striving to be the subject of her own life, fully human and alive to the sacred in the mortal world.
Howe is one of our most important poets and, with Magdalene, she again proves herself an indispensable voice as we move through our own lives of love and longing. This book is a spiritual guidepost for the lives we live now, a necessary collection that has arrived just in time.
Marie Howe, former poet laureate of New York, is the author of The Good Thief, What the Living Do, and The Kingdom of Ordinary Time. She teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and lives in New York City.
