Zen is often described as the school of Buddhism that is beyond words. Yet, sutras, poetry, and other texts generated within the Zen tradition are voluminous and legendary.

Join one of NYZCCC’s Guiding Teachers, Sensei Koshin Paley Ellison, to explore Zen’s compelling history and to unravel its seeming contradictions. Through reading assignments and rigorous classroom engagement, students will develop the skill to discover relevance and meaning in complex texts.

Within this survey of Zen history, we will study the work of 13th century Soto Zen founder and celebrated writer, poet, and philosopher, Eihei Dogen. Today, Dogen is considered one of the world’s most remarkable religious thinkers. The questions that drove him are at the heart of contemporary Zen practice.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
