Tangaryo: Becoming a Formal Zen Student
Since the early days of Zen, entering formally into training
under the guidance of a teacher has been the traditional path
for those wishing to make a commitment to Zen practice.
One of the requirements for becoming a Formal Student of either Sensei Robert Chodo Campbell or Sensei Koshin Paley Ellison, Guiding Teachers at NYZCCC, is to participate in Tangaryo – which is an all-day seated meditation that demonstrates the sincerity of intention and aspiration.
Tanga is a Japanese term meaning “to stay until morning” and refers to an overnight stay in a Zen monastery. The room set aside for this purpose is known as the tangaryo.
We continue this tradition at NYZCCC. After discussing your wish with one of the Sensei’s you will be invited to sit this Tangaryo online via Zoom.
