A Fleeting Moment | Anna Philip

A Fleeting Moment

This morning while making breakfast for my son

I suddenly felt happy… just for a fleeting moment

Like when lightning strikes in the deep dark night

for just a split second… I felt happy

like thunder following the lightning,

my foundation shaken

my soul shaken back

I desperately tried to hold on,

forced back into reality

but the moment had passed, like thunder following lightning

as tears flushed my face, I was flooded with emotion,

grief, sadness, guilt, hope, and confusion.

Grief, how long it’s been since I’ve felt happy

Sadness, I lost you

Guilt feeling sorry for myself, and perhaps I can feel happy without you…

Hope, happiness will become part of my new reality

And confusion of it all

A Fleeting Moment is a poem by NYZC’s bereavement group member, Anna Philip.
