“If you don’t understand the way right before you, how will you know the path as you walk?”

The Sandokai: The Identity of Relative and Absolute is a poem by the eight-century Zen Master, Sekito Kisen. The poem addresses the question of how the oneness of things and the multiplicity of things coexist. Included in the text are clear teachings on how to live a wholehearted, caring life. This study is valuable not only for those with a general curiosity of Zen and care, but also for students of Zen practice wanting to deepen their understanding of the Japanese Soto Zen tradition and lineage.
