About The Book
The Treasury of the True Dharma Eye is a masterpiece by Dogen, a profound expression of Zen wisdom. This eight-volume set, re-released in 2023 by a team of distinguished translators, commemorates the 100-year anniversary of Soto Zen in North America. It offers not only accuracy but a deep understanding of Dogen’s voice.
This course will focus on the first volume. Each week, select readings from the text will be sent to you so there is no need for you to purchase the books.

Course Details | Opening the Treasury
- Class Dates: January 24th | January 31st | February 7th | February 14th | February 21st | March 13th | March 20th | March 27th | April 3rd | April 10th | April 17th | May 8th | May 22nd
- Online and In Person: This hybrid model class allows students to attend the program remotely or in person. There are a limited number of in person spots available.
- Class Components Include: Weekly live classes (recorded); assigned readings; and discussion questions with access to an online learning platform.
- Includes NYZC Community Meditations: The course schedule includes participation in NYZC's Wednesday community sits (whether virtually or in-person) from 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm ET. This follows the class, which will be held from 4:15 pm – 5:45 pm.
- Master’s Level Credit: Register at this level if you need Masters Credit. You will also be required to write a 10-page paper. If you register at any of the audit levels, you can still participate fully in the class and will not be required to submit a 10-page paper.

About the TEACHER
Koshin Paley Ellison Sensei, MFA, LMSW, DMIN, is an author, Zen teacher, Jungian psychotherapist, leader in contemplative care, and co-founder of an educational non-profit called the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care. His books, grounded in Buddhist wisdom and practice, have gained national attention. Through its numerous educational programs, contemplative retreats, and Soto Zen Buddhist practices, the New York Zen Center touches thousands of lives every year. Koshin has appeared on dozens of podcasts and his work has been featured in the New York Times, PBS, CBS Sunday Morning and other media outlets.
