A Pathway to Deep Presence:
Explorations of Symbolic Listening
with Leslye NOyes, Mdiv, PsyD
Once a month on Sundays
January 28th – June 9th, 2024
4:00 – 6:00pm ET
In this course, we will learn and experientially practice Jung’s theory and method of Symbolic Listening. To listen symbolically is to deeply ‘hear’ the person within and before you.
This practice opens you to the inner world of the person and their deepest longing and suffering. Their longing – so central to their being – can begin to be welcomed, understood, and engaged, allowing for greater freedom, liberation, ease and depth of being.
Learning this method helps you:
- deeply receive and understand yourself and others
- depathologize yourself and others
- deepen your presence in personal and professional settings.
Throughout these six months, participants will gain a working knowledge of the following Jungian concepts:
- The western mind and it’s organization of “opposites”
- Denotative and connotative reading of texts
- Personal and collective unconscious
- Archetypal processes, with a focus on individuation
- The transcendent function of the psyche
- The bivalence of images
- The teleology of symptoms and symbols
Structure of the class: Each class will be a bite size offering of one of Jung’s signature concepts, a teacher demonstration of working with that concept, and time for participants to practice this method with one another. Plenty of suggested readings will be offered to support your learning!
No prior experience necessary! This is for ‘beginner’ or ‘advanced’ students alike and is especially useful for clinicians in private practice or those in care-partnership situations.
12 CE credits offered after completion of the course for social workers, LMHC or LP — more information below.
